148 Democrats Oppose Bill to Deport Immigrants Who Assault Police

(ReliableNews.org) – President Joe Biden has not secured the border and he’s nearing the end of his first (and maybe last) term. In honor of National Police Week, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) brought several pro-law enforcement bills up for a vote. Democrats voted against one bill that would protect police officers from illegal immigrants.

On May 15, the House voted on a bill sponsored by Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ), titled the Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act. It seeks to create a new category of inadmissibility for migrants if they assault law enforcement officers. If authorities arrest an immigrant for hitting a cop, then the legislation would require them to be held in custody until Immigration and Customs Enforcement could deport them.

Van Drew introduced the legislation in February, weeks after seven immigrants were arrested for attacking cops in New York City. He said there was “no reason” a migrant who attacks police should be allowed to remain in the US. He went on to say their behavior shows they have “zero respect for [the] rule of law” and won’t contribute to society in a positive way.

The majority of the Left disagreed with the New Jersey congressman. When the House voted on the legislation, 148 Democrats voted against it. Only 54 voted with their GOP colleagues, but it was enough to get the legislation over the finish line. Eleven Democrats and six Republicans didn’t vote on the bill. The bill has now been sent to the Senate, where it faces an uncertain future.

In another vote, 61 Democrats voted against a House resolution that condemned violence on law enforcement. The measure cited the 2020 George Floyd protests and argued that the “rule of law and law enforcement officials diminished” in the wake of the demonstrations. It slammed cities that passed measures to reform police departments after the killing of Floyd by police in Minneapolis, saying there are now “significant risks for law enforcement” while they are doing their jobs.

At the beginning of May, four officers were murdered in North Carolina.
