Australia Continues Protesting Against Vaccine Mandates

(ReliableNews.org) – In the United States, millions of Americans are angry about President Joe Biden’s decision to mandate vaccines to a large swath of people. He announced his decision on September 9 in a fiery speech where he said he was “losing patience” with people worried about the COVID-19 vaccines. But Biden isn’t the only world leader angering people over vaccine mandates. Australian citizens have also been taking a stand against similar orders.

Australian Protests

According to the Australian Financial Review, more than 2 million Australians may soon be forced to get the COVID-19 vaccine. There are already public health mandates in place for about 1 million citizens, but private employers may start requiring the vaccines as well.

On September 17, officials in Melbourne, Australia, announced that all construction workers must receive the vaccine by 11:59 p.m. on September 23 in order to work in the city. Roughly 2,000 protesters turned out to demonstrate in the days after the announcement. On Monday, September 20, officers arrested 60 protesters who clashed with police. Authorities used rubber bullets and pepper spray to break up the crowds.

The government has to shut down some of the job sites in the area because of the mandates. Some of the sites have been empty for two weeks, and there’s no end in sight.

Australian COVID-19 Lockdowns

The Australian people have dealt with months of strict COVID-19 restrictions. The country had tried to block all foreign arrivals, shut its borders and isolate every infection. Some cities have implemented lockdowns after finding one case in their area. Melbourne, where the protests are happening, had more than 200 days of lockdowns resulting in unbelievable economic damage.

However, in September, the government decided to change the way it was handling the virus. Instead of putting cities on strict lockdowns, it decided to try to start living with the coronavirus by forcing Australians to get the vaccine.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison told reporters, “This groundhog day has to end, and it will end when we start getting to 70% and 80%” of the people vaccinated. His government hopes to reach that number by October.

Australian citizens aren’t happy about how the PM hopes to meet that goal. He is essentially forcing many of them to get vaccines that they don’t want. One must wonder: Is stripping people of their body autonomy really the way to go about it?
