Cancel Culture Hits Hollywood's Golden Globes

( – For the last 76 years, the Golden Globes ceremony has presented awards to the various talents around Hollywood. Although the event usually involves a live audience, a star-studded red carpet, and golden awards presented on stage with acceptance speeches, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) decided to keep the ceremony small with no red carpet in sight.

Although the organization claimed the near cancellation of the event was due mainly to COVID-19 concerns, many believe it’s also the result of the recent Hollywood boycott over ethics and diversity.

According to Variety, the HFPA couldn’t persuade any big-named figures in the land of glitz and glamour to attend the annual ceremony. In fact, NBC canceled the show’s broadcast, and more than 100 public relations firms planned to withdraw their support.

So, instead of concentrating on awards, celebrities, and dresses, the organization that runs the Golden Globes announced it intends to highlight the group’s philanthropy. Also, to combat the accusations of discrimination and lack of diversity, the HFPA coordinated with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to direct focus on “equity and inclusion” throughout the entertainment industry.

With the award show shifting its concentration away from elite admiration and toward self-awareness and growth, perhaps other award shows like the Grammys and the Emmys won’t be far behind.
