(ReliableNews.org) – George Clooney and his wife, Amal Clooney, an international human rights attorney, founded the Clooney Foundation for Justice in 2016. The organization provides legal support to human rights abuse victims around the world. The organization is now reportedly pursuing arrest warrants against journalists.
The Clooney Foundation for Justice is seeking secret arrest warrants for members of the press who are allegedly part of a campaign of propaganda waged by Russia. The foundation’s Docket Project is trying to use European laws against the journalists involved. Anna Neistat spoke to Voice of America earlier this month and said the foundation is asking countries where there are provisions on the books that target propaganda to issue arrest warrants.
Neistat said they are seeking secret warrants so they don’t have to reveal the names of the targets. She said that they are targeting “the most prominent Russian propagandists” and hope to catch the journalists off guard when they travel to the countries where the laws exist. She said, “It’s better if they are left guessing rather than receiving a clear warning.”
Russian authorities condemned the Clooney Foundation and accused the West of double standards. They highlighted the fact that human rights attorneys haven’t said anything about Ukraine persecuting Russian journalists. Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia’s First Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, pointed to the deaths of Russian journalists Rostislav Zhuravlev, Darya Dugina, Semyon Yeremin, and others.
Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Kremlin, called The Docket’s legal team “lunatics.”
The Clooney Foundation issued a statement denying it was going after journalists. George Clooney claimed his foundation “would never go after journalists, even if we disagree with them.” He said he has a “long track record of protecting journalists.”
Amal Clooney recently made headlines when she revealed she was part of a panel of experts who recommended arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant along with three Hamas leaders. They are accused of committing war crimes and human rights violations.
