(ReliableNews.org) – Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and former President Donald Trump have a tumultuous relationship, to say the least. That didn’t stop the senator from defending the presumptive Republican nominee.
On May 8, Stephanie “Stormy Daniels” Clifford took the stand in the Manhattan trial against former President Donald Trump. The ex-adult film star gave graphic details about her alleged one-night stand with the former POTUS. He is currently on trial for allegedly falsifying financial documents to cover up a payment his attorney made to Clifford before the 2016 election to keep her quiet.
Later that day, Cruz appeared on Fox News and defended the former president. He said there wasn’t a “person on planet Earth” who believed Trump “has been celibate all his life” and said the trial wasn’t news. The senator accused Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg wants to drag the former president “through the gutter” because he thinks the trial is a “political smear job.”

Cruz’s remarks prompted an immediate backlash on X, formerly Twitter. Mark Jacob, an ex-editor at the Chicago Tribune, remarked that the senator wants Americans to think the only two choices the former president had were to be “‘celibate all his life’ or cheating on his wife” with an adult film star.
Another X user pointed out that “‘celibate’ and ‘adulterous’ are two different things,” but that the case against him relates to financial crimes and the election. Stephen Kocen, a Texas Democrat who ran for Congress in 2022, responded to Cruz, saying the case isn’t “about being celibate”; it’s about the former president “not being faithful.”
Clifford repeated her allegations that she had an affair with Trump. She told the jury that she “blacked out” in his room but went into graphic detail about what happened. The defense team called for a mistrial during her testimony, but Judge Juan Merchan rejected the request.
Trump has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and denies having an affair with Clifford.
