Dark Money Group Pushes for Court Packing

(ReliableNews.org) – The use of dark money, or political donations from undisclosed donors, is nothing new to Democrats. One such group, the Sixteen Thirty Fund, has been using money to pressure Democrats to eliminate the filibuster as part of an effort to force its liberal agenda on the Senate. A recent report showed that one of its affiliates is targeting another branch of government for dominance.

Fox News reported on April 8 that Demand Justice, a Sixteen Thirty Fund project, is spearheading an effort to “overhaul the federal court system.” Caitlin Sutherland, the head of Americans for Public Trust, told Fox News that the group wants to pad the Supreme Court with additional seats, establish term limits for its justices, and restructure the lower courts.

Of additional concern is the Biden administration’s ties to Demand Justice. Paige Herwig, Biden’s chief advisor for judicial nominations, previously worked for the group, as did White House press secretary Jen Psaki. Herwig was the group’s deputy chief counsel, and Psaki served as a consultant for the group. She also served on the advisory board for Supreme Court Voter, an associated project.

The ability of Demand Justice to leave its mark on the nation’s courts remains to be seen. But, it is something to watch. We will keep you updated on future developments.
