(ReliableNews.org) – Every year, as many as 61,000 people die from complications related to the flu and millions get sick. This creates an opportunity for scammers to capitalize on the fear of the illness. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is now warning the American people to be on the lookout for fake products.
Flu Season Is Here and So Are Scammers
Americans are entering flu season at the same time as a new wave of COVID-19 rips through communities. The fear of dealing with either illness could make people extra vulnerable to scams. On November 12, the FDA warned Americans about illegal flu products possibly circulating.
In a notice, health officials said flu season may prompt dishonest individuals to sell “fraudulent products.” They target “unsuspecting consumers” who want to protect themselves and their families “from COVID-19 and other infectious diseases.”
According to the FDA, no over-the-counter medications or treatments can treat or cure the flu. Instead, people can buy products to target symptoms. There’s a vaccine available to those who want it.
Scam Products Consumers May Run Across
Both fake flu and COVID-19 cures are being sold right now. Some of the scams people should be aware of are over-the-counter products that claim to:
- Prevent you from catching viruses
- Cure either COVID-19 or the flu
- Reduce the length or intensity of viral infections
- Boost your immune system in order to fend off viruses
Additionally, shysters are offering services to people in order to “protect” them from catching viral infections like COVID-19. Be on the lookout for:
- People who want to sanitize your air ducts
- Calls from individuals offering free coronavirus tests
- Anyone offering grant money from the government without you initiating the process
A good rule of thumb is to remember that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
