(ReliableNews.org) – The George W. Bush Presidential Center has been targeted in a sophisticated scheme involving criminal computer hackers.
According to a report by the Washington Times, the George W. Bush Presidential Center was targeted in an illegal plot. Officials were forced to pay criminal attackers ransom money to restore donors’ private information. Those familiar with the incident claim some data was recovered, but hackers still stole large amounts of private information.
According to the report, the hackers breached the security of Blackbaud, the third-party management service company used by the Bush Center. They were able to access contribution history, names and contact information.

The Bush Center said Blackbaud reached out, informed donors of the attack and let them know the company paid a ransom to have stolen information destroyed. After the money was paid, the hackers followed through and sent confirmation.
The center released a statement saying it doesn’t believe the information is in danger of being used nefariously. Of course, there’s no way to know that.
