(ReliableNews.org) – Officials in the US are angry with the Chinese government over the way it handled the COVID-19 outbreak. Nobody knows exactly how the virus started, but one thing’s for sure, they hid the severity of the outbreak from the rest of the world, wasting crucial time. Now, a group of Republican lawmakers wants to punish the communist government.
Reps. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX), Jim Banks (R-IN) and Lance Gooden (R-TX) sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. In it, they requested the government use the Global Magnitsky Act to go after 10 Chinese Communist Party officials.
The Magnitsky Act is a law named for Russian accountant Sergei Magnitsky. In 2009, Magnitsky died after being tortured in a Moscow jail for exposing tax fraud by high-level Russian officials. In 2012, the US passed a law allowing for sanctions on Russia’s government officials who violated his human rights. In 2016, Congress added to the law, renamed it the Global Magnitsky Act, and gave the executive branch the power to sanction corrupt government officials around the globe. Former President Obama signed the law at the end of his tenure in office.
Reps. Banks, Gooden and Crenshaw believe the 10 Chinese officials they named behaved so egregiously after the outbreak the US should sanction them.
Chinese communist officials can threaten us all they want.

Every Chinese government official responsible for the disastrous response to COVID-19 deserves punishment. As of May 18, America has lost more than 91,000 people to the deadly virus. Our entire country is grieving the loss of life and those responsible should be held accountable.
