GOP Shut Down Two of Nancy Pelosi Bills

( – Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has enjoyed a majority in the House since 2019. The Democrat has pushed through a number of controversial bills because of that majority, including twice impeaching former President Donald Trump. However, she no longer holds the power she once did. Recently, she suffered a humiliating defeat when she tried to fast-track two controversial bills.

Pelosi’s Losses

On Tuesday, June 15, Pelosi tried to use a procedure called the “suspension of rules” to pass two Democratic bills. This tactic is usually used to quickly pass bills that aren’t controversial because they require a two-thirds supermajority.

The first of the two bills was the Equal Access to Contraception for Veterans Act. This bill would prohibit the Department of Veterans Affairs from making veterans pay for birth control that health insurance plans are required by law to provide without the cost-sharing requirement. Currently, the Affordable Care Act requires health insurance companies to provide certain contraceptives for free to women, unless it is a plan paid for by an employer who has received a religious exemption.

The other piece of legislation that Pelosi tried to force through by suspending rules was the LGBTQ Business Equal Credit Enforcement and Investment Act. That legislation would have amended the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) to include “LGBTQ-owned.” The ECOA is supposed to provide businesses equal access to loans. The bill wasn’t particularly controversial, but the GOP did not support suspending the rules in order to pass it.

Time to Stop Suspending the Rules

House Freedom Caucus Chairman Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) told Breitbart that the defeat was “stunning.” He explained the problem Republicans had with the legislation is not that the bills were necessarily controversial, it’s that they didn’t like that “Democrats are trying to change all the rules” to pass their agenda. The congressman said the GOP has to “fight on every issue” now so that there is transparency for the American people. He also said that it puts the “speed stick down.”

Pelosi is just trying to cram legislative items through as fast as she can, presumably because the Left is worried they will lose the majority after the 2022 midterms. Just because they are worried about losing their power doesn’t mean the American people shouldn’t be able to see who voted for what bill. That is what roll call bills are for and the Speaker was trying to bypass the process.

The move by the House GOP also proved that even though Pelosi holds a slim majority, they still have power and they aren’t afraid to use it.
