Justice Department Orders Blue States To Hand Over Information On Nursing Home Deaths Due To Coronavirus

(ReliableNews.org) – COVID-19 has ravaged the world, there’s no doubt about it. Older Americans have been hit especially hard. In fact, according to CDC data, the vast majority of the deaths have been people who are age 55 and older.

Nursing homes, in particular, have experienced high volumes. In some states, the policies put forth by the governors are being blamed for the loss of life. The Department of Justice now wants to know just how responsible they are.

DOJ Investigating

On August 26, the DOJ released a statement announcing it’s requested data from states that had high COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes. The department launched an inquiry into Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Michigan.

Those states, all run by Democratic governors, had policies in place that reportedly required senior facilities to admit people who tested positive for the coronavirus. The idea was to try to prevent the hospitals from becoming overburdened, but instead, the deadly virus spread like a wildfire.

The DOJ’s Civil Rights Division is now determining whether it should “initiate investigations under the federal Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act.” The law protects elderly Americans in state-run senior living facilities.

Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Division Eric Dreiband said the department is “protecting the rights” of Americans who are “some of society’s most vulnerable” to make sure they’re being cared for properly and not put at risk.

Michigan Fires Back

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) claimed the DOJ is launching a political attack, not trying to protect the elderly. She claimed it’s clearly a partisan attack because the “letter was sent during the middle of the Republican National Convention” and it was only addressed to Democratic governors.

Whitmer blasted the Trump Administration and claimed it needs to stop “the partisan games.” Because as we all know, trying to protect the elderly from Civil Rights abuses is a game, not something that should be happening every single day, right?
