Key Democrats Remain Silent Amid Cuba Protests

( – Thousands of Cubans hit the streets over the weekend in rare nationwide protests against impoverished conditions on the island nation. They lack personal freedoms under the harsh leadership of the nation’s extremist communist regime. Protesters were observed waving the American flag and shouting “freedom” and “liberty.”

As one might expect, Republican lawmakers like Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) quickly showed their support for the Cuban people in light of their decades of suffering. However, so far, Leftists like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) remain silent on the plight of Cubans.

Sander’s history and apparent lack of concern for Cuban protesters or their aims shouldn’t be very surprising. Cameras caught him speaking about his excitement watching Fidel Castro “rising up against ugly rich people” during the Cuban Revolution. He praised Cuba’s “value system” while serving as Burlington, Vermont mayor and even visited Castro in Cuba in 1989.

On Monday afternoon, July 12, Fox News reached out to Sanders. He begrudgingly said he supported “the right” of the people of Latin America and Cuba to “protest for a decent economy and… political freedom.” However, he failed to address the recent Cuban protests directly.

Fox Business host Stuart Varney put it best when he noted that Cuban protests are shedding light on the failures of socialism while Bernie and other leftists are “working overtime to introduce socialism” to America.
