(ReliableNews.org) – Like Russia, North Korea has become more isolated from the Western world in recent years. Both countries have strongman leaders who rule with iron fists. Recently, Kim Jong-un visited the eastern European nation and left with some explosive gifts.
On September 12, Kim arrived in Russia on an armored train. During the trip, a regional governor gave Kim five “kamikaze” drones as a gift. He also gave him a bulletproof vest and a reconnaissance drone. He spent about a week in the nation, making stops at various military sites and meeting with President Vladimir Putin at the Vostochny Cosmodrome.
Putin allowed the North Korean leader to visit a fighter jet plant in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, a university, and view the Russian Pacific Fleet. The plant was one the US government sanctioned because of its role in the war on Ukraine. While in the nation, he and Putin allegedly discussed a potential arms deal. However, no agreement was reached by the time he left on September 19.
Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov spoke to The Associated Press about the meeting, saying they’d shown Kim one of their “leading aircraft plants.” He said Moscow saw the “potential for cooperation” for a deal related to aircraft or other industries. He said it was “particularly acute for solving [Russia’s] task of achieving technological sovereignty.”
The United States is concerned that a deal between Putin and Kim could result in Russia selling advanced weapons technology to North Korea in exchange for the ammunition Russia needs to continue its war with Ukraine.
Lim Soo-suk, a spokesperson for South Korea’s Foreign Ministry, issued a statement saying the US ally was very concerned that “despite repeated warnings from the international community,” Putin and Kim “discussed military cooperation issues.” He also pointed out that if they cooperate on military weapons or technology, then it would be a violation of UN resolutions.
