(ReliableNews.org) – Mass shootings have become a regular occurrence in the United States. There have been more than 540 in 2023 alone. One of those incidents recently took place in Pennsylvania.
On October 8, police responded to a call for backup at 12:30 a.m. about a shooting at the Chevy Chase Community Center in White Township, Indiana County. The center is located just over a mile away from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Officers arrived on the scene to find a private event taking place at the center. Attendees had to pay an entrance fee, and the police learned that about 150 were inside when someone opened fire.
Nine people were shot when gunshots rang out. One of the victims, 22-year-old Jamar Montae Porterfield Herriot Jr., was shot and died at the scene. The other victims were between the ages of 18 and 23. An 18-year-old from Illinois was in critical condition at the hospital.
WTAE reported Lt. Col. George Bivens said that the police responded to a noise complaint at the address at midnight, about 30 minutes before the shooting. Officers asked the partygoers to turn the music down, but then law enforcement asked a Pennsylvania State Police mounted unit to move to the area as a precaution.
The mounted unit arrived in the area and heard multiple gunshots from within the building. They saw a crowd running out through the doors and jumping out of windows. The officers called for backup and then began helping people who suffered injuries.
Bivens said police recovered multiple firearms at the scene. They are looking for more than one suspect. He said police are working with the district attorney’s office and asking the community to cooperate. He explained there were many people at the event, and law enforcement is asking anyone with information to come forward, even if they think it isn’t relevant.
Crime Stoppers is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to a suspect. Anyone with information should contact PSP Troop A at 724-357-1960.
