Die-hard Trekkies must be wondering if the USS Enterprise performed another slingshot time-traveling journey to the Solar system. CNN and other news outlets have reported that the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter found a peculiar, yet instantly recognizable (at least to geeks and nerds everywhere) triangular shape on the surface of the red planet.
It appears to be the insignia of Starfleet, the exploratory and military branch from Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek universe. This raises so many questions. Did Roddenberry have visions of the real future of the planet? Are we such a primitive backwater that the Prime Directive prevents them from saying “hi?” Did real extraterrestrials intercept our old TV broadcasts and believe they had found an inconspicuous cover?
Or, did wind and seismic activity manage to create something that captured our imaginations? Okay, we have to go with that one with a 99.9999% probability, but that teeny-tiny little seed left over is what most likely gave Roddenberry, George Lucas and all who have come after the inspiration to create a whole genre of entertainment.
