(ReliableNews.org) – Shark attacks are relatively uncommon. Fatal shark attacks are even more so. Sadly, they do still happen and an actor is now dead after an encounter with one of the animals.
On June 23, 49-year-old Tamayo Perry died in an apparent shark attack off the coast of the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. The surf instructor and lifeguard appeared in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” “Blue Crush,” “Hawaii Five-O,” and many others. Just before 1 p.m. local time, Honolulu Ocean Safety and other first responders responded to the beach after receiving a call about a surfer who was fatally injured in a shark attack.
The first responders used a jet ski to bring Perry back to shore. Officials then pronounced him dead. The actor served as a lifeguard with the Honolulu Ocean Safety. The organization’s acting chief Kurt Lager described Perry as having an “infectious” personality. He said, “As much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more.”
In an interview Emilia Perry spoke about her late husband. Like him, she is also a surfer. She said that while the world knew him as an actor and surfer, those close to him knew “he was a man of deep faith.” She told ABC’s Matt Rivers that she was “upset and devastated” by the loss of her husband but also had “a weird calmness” in her heart because she knows “he’s in a better place.”
Jesse King, one of Perry’s friends, also spoke to the morning show. He said that his friend knew those waters very well and was paddling out on Sunday as he typically does. King explained that there was nothing strange or different about that day that would have indicated there was something wrong, he said it was, “a regular day.”
Perry’s death is only the ninth shark attack fatality in three decades. King said that he would have encouraged others to continue surfing and enjoying the ocean because they “love it.”
Emilia described her relationship as “the best 25-year vacation of [her] life with him” but “not it’s over” and she has to “come back to reality.”
