Presidential Candidate Under Water on Taxes and Child Support

(ReliableNews.org) – Cornel West is running for president as a candidate for the Green Party. The political activist is running on a social justice platform. New reporting indicates he’s not doing very well in his personal life.

According to reports, West is underwater with both child support and taxes. The Daily Beast claimed he owes almost $544,000 in federal income taxes. The debt was accrued in 2005 and then from 2013 to 2017. This isn’t the first time he’s reportedly owed back taxes, either. In 2008 he owed over $34,000. He also had to pay back $725,000 in taxes from 1998 through 2005.

In addition to the tax bill, the presidential candidate allegedly owes $49,500 in back child support from a judgment handed down in 2003.

West is a bestselling author and an Ivy League professor. He’s built a reputation as one of the leading voices in the movement to make wealthy Americans pay more in taxes. Like Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), whom he supported in both of his presidential runs, he believes the rich should contribute more money to help support the lower classes.

Ironically, even though he owes money to the IRS, he continues to advocate for higher taxes. During an interview with the New York Post about Hunter Biden’s failure to pay his taxes, West said the president’s son’s first plea deal was “a little tap on the wrist” compared to what people without any power would face.

West’s presidential campaign has some Democrats worried because he could potentially peel votes away from President Joe Biden in critical states like Pennsylvania and Michigan. One of the reasons the POTUS was able to win in 2020 is that there wasn’t a truly competitive candidate on his Left siphoning votes away from him. David Axelrod has warned that West could destroy Biden’s chances of winning reelection.

The question now is whether his giant tax bill and unpaid child support will destroy his campaign. Time will tell.
