Project Python Deals Huge Blow to Mexican Cartel

( – Mexican drug cartels have been a major problem for both the US and Mexico. Their presence in multiple areas of the black market makes them extremely active, influential, and dangerous. One of them in particular, the Cartel Jalisco New Generation (CJNG), is considered one of the deadliest crime organizations in recent US history.

The CJNG primarily operates in central Mexico, Baja California, and Baja California Sur. It’s known for leaving piles of bodies in the streets and hanging from bridges in its wake. The gang also carries machine guns, hand grenades, and even shot down a Mexican helicopter with a rocket launcher.

Needless to say, the CJNG is an extremely dangerous bunch.

Exploitation of Children and Teens

The CJNG frequently uses children and juveniles to smuggle drugs into the country. One instance involved a stash of meth hidden underneath car seats where two children were sitting in child safety seats. Teenagers are also targeted as recruitment fodder to smuggle drugs across the border.

Through offers of free clothes and phones, the CJNG entices kids to join the cartel. They’re told that they can’t get in trouble for smuggling due to being underage, which isn’t true. Obviously, these exploited kids aren’t told that their lives are being put in danger by taking part in CJNG activities.

The Takedown

However, thanks to a recent operation known as Project Python, over 750 members of the CJNG were arrested via a string of coordinated raids. The arrests include some top members of the gang. The undercover operation occurred all across the US in states like Indiana, Illinois, and California.

Currently, the CJNG’s leader, Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” is still at large with a $10 million reward offered for his capture. His son and daughter were captured in the raid, though. One week after the string of arrests his sister, Jessica Johanna Oseguera González, known as “La Negra,” was also detained.

The CJNG is estimated to control two-thirds of the US drug market, so this is a major blow to the black market drug trade. Project Python ran for around six months where agents were able to seize hundreds of millions of dollars in illicit drugs. Among these drugs were heroin, meth, cocaine, and fentanyl.

In addition, $20 million in raw cash and a stash of weapons have also been taken.

Now that multiple mid- and high-level members have been detained, the CJNG will have a very difficult time regaining its strength. It’s almost certain they won’t give up, but thanks to Project Python, they’ve been dealt a major setback. The information gained from this operation will further bolster the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and other entities’ efforts to crack down on the CJNG.
