Senators Urge Biden to Reconsider Launching Drone Strikes on Terrorists

( – Progressives have long questioned the American military’s use of drones. Anti-war liberals often criticized former Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump for their use of unmanned weapons. Now, Democrats are demanding President Joe Biden reconsider his use of drones to target terrorists after a horrific mistake.

On September 27, Democratic Senators Dick Durbin (IL) and Patrick Leahy (VT) sent Biden a letter saying the “use of lethal strikes, including by armed drones, merits particular scrutiny.” The lawmakers pointed to an August 29 drone strike in Afghanistan that killed a family of 10, including seven children. They told the president that the U.S. needs to reconsider using drones and other airstrikes to take out terrorists, saying, “Far too many people are erroneously labeled as targets based on faulty or inadequate intelligence.”

The lawmakers asked the president to:

  • Explain the steps he was taking to move away from lethal strikes.
  • Describe steps he’s taking to make sure all strikes comply with human rights and war laws.
  • Share any assessments the government is conducting about the lethal force policies throughout the war and any plans for a sustainable approach to counterterrorism.
  • Explain what the administration is doing to investigate the August strike and provide amends to the victims’ families.

The military blamed the drone strike mistake on failed intelligence but has not outlined any plans to prevent it from happening again. Biden’s own party might force him into action.
