(ReliableNews.org) – Over Memorial Day weekend, JBS Foods USA reported a cyberattack. As a result of the attack, the world’s largest meat producer closed all of its US beef plants. An official with the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union said that all of the JBS meat packing facilities were impacted in some way.
Although the company was operating at nearly full capacity days later, experts were still worried the cyberattack would strain the supply chain and cause an increase in prices. The crime has also reportedly impacted foreign relations between Russia and the US.
FBI Names Suspects
The FBI released a statement on Wednesday, June 2, alleging Russian hackers REvil and Sodinokibi were responsible for the attack. According to the statement, the agency is continuing to work “diligently to bring the threat actors to justice.”
The White House also responded to the attack, placing the blame on Russia. Principal Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that the Biden administration is speaking directly to leaders in Moscow. She said the administration was letting President Vladimir Putin know that “responsible states do not harbor ransomware criminals.”
Other reports allege the investigations are actually going much further than what the FBI and White House are admitting.
Putin Under Investigation?
According to an exclusive report by ‘Just the News’, US spy agencies are allegedly investigating whether Putin knew about the cyberattack. The unnamed official explained that if Putin knew, did he approve and if he knew, why were the attacks launched and why were they launched now.
One Republican lawmaker believes that Putin is using cyber warfare to test President Biden. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) told Fox News that the Russian president can’t be unaware of the attacks. He thinks that even if the hackers didn’t get “direct approval,” they got some kind of approval.
The attacks come before Putin and Biden are supposed to hold a summit. Is it possible the Russian president wants to see how the American president will respond?
