Wendy Williams Gets Unfortunate Medical News

(ReliableNews.org) – Wendy Williams has been largely out of the spotlight since leaving “The Wendy Williams Show” in 2021. The former radio DJ quit hosting the popular talk show after experiencing multiple health issues. Now the public is learning more about her condition.

On February 22, the 59-year-old talk show host’s caregivers announced she was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and primary progressive aphasia. FTD gained notoriety last year when actor Bruce Willis’ family revealed he had the disease, which impacts the frontal and temporal lobes and affects cognitive function, language, and communication behavior.

FTD is a degenerative disease that results in a gradual decline and loss of cognitive function. It’s often misdiagnosed as a psychiatric condition, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and other conditions. On average, it takes more than three years to get a proper diagnosis.

The docuseries “Where Is Wendy Williams?” aired on Lifetime on February 23. During the second part of the series, her 23-year-old son, Kevin Hunter Jr., claimed his mom was diagnosed with “alcohol-induced” dementia. He alleges his mother’s doctor said that her alcoholism began affecting her brain.

Travis Finnie, Williams’ nephew, and her friend DJ Boof said that she began drinking when tabloids reported her ex-husband, Kevin Hunter, was having an affair. In 2019, she checked into rehab and eventually filed for divorce after finding out Hunter had a baby with another woman. In 2022, a court appointed a guardian to oversee Williams’ finances. Then, in 2023, she ended up in a treatment facility to deal with the cognitive issues she was experiencing.

Brenda Rapp, a cognitive scientist at Johns Hopkins University, told ABC News that Williams’ diagnosis is “really tough.” She explained that it can be “frustrating” because the person with the disease doesn’t often know they are doing things that are bothering other people. She said it’s not easy to predict how fast someone will deteriorate because the disease spreads at an unpredictable rate.
