What We Learned About Our Right To Protest In 2020

(ReliableNews.org) – The First Amendment of the Constitution gives everyone in America the right to protest. In 2020, we saw tens of thousands of people take to the streets to protest (and riot) what they believed was racial injustice. However, many of the Leftists who participated learned the right to protest only goes so far.

In response to the violent, destructive riots carried out by the radical Left, Republican legislatures in states impacted by the riots responded. Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) proposed six criminal offenses that would punish people who “hijack peaceful protests.” Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) wants to use the state’s anti-racketeering laws for those who fund and organize “violent or disorderly” assembly.

The decision by these governors shows the GOP that the protections granted under the Constitution for protests are not absolute. The First Amendment only provides Americans the right to assemble peaceably. Riots are not peaceful, therefore the Republicans have every right to increase penalties.
