Do You Know How to Reach Your Elected Officials?

(ReliableNews.org) – The US has 435 members of the House and 100 senators. Every American (except DC residents) has a member of Congress and two senators representing them on the federal level. They have even more politicians representing them on the state level and even the local level. The question is, do you know how to reach those officials?

Contacting your representatives is the easiest way to let them know what issues are important to you. They want to hear from their constituents. To find out who is representing you in the US House and get their contact information, all you have to do is go to House.gov and enter your zip code. If you would like to contact your senators, go to Senate.gov and choose your state from the drop-down menu.

A lot of people get really wrapped up in federal politics but forget that local politicians have a huge impact on their day-to-day lives. Speaking to them is just as important as reaching out to lawmakers in the US Congress. To find your state representatives, you can either do a quick search on your state’s legislative website. For example, if you live in the Sunshine State, you would go to MyFloridaHouse.gov or FlSenate.gov and enter your information.

Voters can also visit USA.gov rather than going to their individual state’s websites. The website also gives information about who your local officials are and provides their contact information.

When you call your official’s office and speak to someone on the phone, they will ask for some identifying information. Sometimes, you will receive a voicemail. When that happens, remember to incident the following information:

  • Name
  • Zip code
  • Phone number

Yuri Beckelman, the current chief of staff to Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-FL), told WIRED that constituents who make the greatest effort to speak to their representatives are the ones who will see the biggest reward. He explained that elected officials want to know what’s impacting them personally because it shapes their priorities.
